Specifically, I’m using what’s called an “Attribution-NonCommercial-NoDerivatives 4.0 International” Creative Commons license. Under the terms of this license, you are free to use the image as indicated by the four icons at the top of this page. When you see such icons here or elsewhere, they mean, left to right:

this is covered by the terms of a Creative Commons license; and

you must identify it as the work of its original creator, not as your own (in my case, just using verbiage like “photo by John E. Simpson” is good enough; a link to the RAMH page where you saw it is a nice plus); and

you may not use the photo for any commercial purpose (e.g., in an advertisement or film); and

you may not make any substantive changes to the image (you can resize it if you want, convert it from .jpg to .png, and so on, but you can’t adapt it for use in any way other than as itself as it appeared here: e.g., can’t change its color scheme, can’t print it and cut it out to incorporate in a collage, and so on). (But see, a bit further down this page, the “other note” of August 25, 2018. It describes a specific exception.)

You can learn more about the specific license by following the link in the header image’s caption; general information about Creative Commons licenses is here. If you have any questions about the above, feel free to contact me by leaving a comment below. I’m not especially rigid, so don’t worry: I’m just trying (like a gazillion other would-be creative people) how best to make my work “fit in” in the tumultuous bazaar of the Web.

Other notes:

The information on this page applies only to my own photographs, not the ones by other photographers which I’ve used here (often from Flickr). To check the permissions of such photos, follow the link I provide back to the original source.

Occasionally — as in the “Recently on Instagram” sidebar, normally shown at the right of RAMH pages — I present direct links to Instagram posts of mine. As you’ll see if you try it, getting copies of those photos is a much more complicated proposition; Instagram isn’t meant for offering copies, but to simplify the sharing of the photos posted there.

This information also applies only to my photographs, not to the text or other content (like videos). At some point, I’ll probably post information about those cases, too; for now, though, I’m just addressing my photos.

Edit to add (2018-08-25): The “no substantive changes” restriction is open to negotiation.
