{"id":14134,"date":"2013-07-02T11:13:10","date_gmt":"2013-07-02T15:13:10","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/johnesimpson.com\/blog\/?p=14134"},"modified":"2013-07-02T11:13:10","modified_gmt":"2013-07-02T15:13:10","slug":"stanley-kubrick-and-one-point-perspective","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/johnesimpson.com\/blog\/2013\/07\/stanley-kubrick-and-one-point-perspective\/","title":{"rendered":"Stanley Kubrick and One-Point Perspective"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>After viewing this, it&#8217;s pretty hard to argue with the notion that one-point perspective was an obsession for Kubrick:<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"http:\/\/player.vimeo.com\/video\/48425421?title=0&amp;byline=0&amp;portrait=0&amp;color=BF370A\" height=\"338\" width=\"600\" allowfullscreen=\"\" frameborder=\"0\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>I found this via a commenter&#8217;s link in <a title=\"Facebook: Film Noir\" href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/groups\/46183249141\/\" target=\"_blank\">the Facebook <em>Film Noir<\/em> group<\/a>, in a discussion of a still photo from Kubrick&#8217;s second feature, <em>Killer&#8217;s Kiss<\/em>. In most (all?) of the scenes captured in the above video, the one-point perspective takes place on a two-dimensional plane: the camera is aimed at the horizon, and the vanishing point is correspondingly horizontal from the viewer. <em>Killer&#8217;s Kiss<\/em> includes lots of other examples of that convention: alleys, warehouses, and so on. In this shot, though, he&#8217;s added a third dimension &#8212; you&#8217;re looking down, as well as across &#8212; making the moment even more vertiginously (and subconsciously) tense.
