For 2013&#8217;s candidate, I offer you &#8220;White Christmas,&#8221; #58 in the six-year playlist &#8212; the third one up from the bottom. I can&#8217;t tell you <em>much<\/em> about the nominal artist, &#8220;Corporal Blossom&#8221;; nearly all the Web links to his name point to download sites. But he appeared on (after apparently conceiving) an album of Christmas music a few years ago, <em>A Mutated Christmas<\/em>, put out on the Illegal Art label. (Read more about Illegal Art &#8212; a &#8220;sampling label&#8221; &#8212; <a title=\"Wikipedia, on Illegal Art\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Illegal_Art\" target=\"_blank\">at Wikipedia<\/a>.) You can download the MP3 version for free\u00a0<a title=\"Illegal Art: 'A Mutated Christmas'\" href=\"http:\/\/illegal-art.net\/compilations\/amutatedchristmas\/index.html\" target=\"_blank\">from the publisher&#8217;s site<\/a>, perhaps because Illegal Art is on &#8220;indefinite hiatus&#8221; (as the site says).\u00a0I haven&#8217;t heard the whole album, but I loved <a title=\"Amazon.com: review of 'A Mutated Christmas'\" href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/review\/R39Q6DCM8OIBRT\/ref=cm_cr_dp_title?ie=UTF8&amp;ASIN=B000250ZTY&amp;channel=detail-glance&amp;nodeID=5174&amp;store=music\" target=\"_blank\">one of the Amazon reviews<\/a>:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"line-height: 1.5em;\">It&#8217;s glitch, and dark ambient electronica, and very very weird. And it gets weirder progressively &#8211; the end of the album is something I would consider to be very unsettling.<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>(&#8220;Glitch,&#8221; apparently, is a musical genre. Who knew?*)<\/p>\n<p><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft\" alt=\"'Corporal Blossom' (Layng Martine III)\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/johnesimpson.com\/images\/corporalblossom.jpg?resize=250%2C168&#038;ssl=1\" width=\"250\" height=\"168\" \/>Corporal Blossom is actually a pseudonym for one\u00a0Layng Martine III. You may not recognize the name &#8212; I certainly didn&#8217;t &#8212; but he comes from a family with strong musical credentials. His dad, <a title=\"Wikipedia, on Layng Martine Jr.\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Layng_Martine,_Jr.\" target=\"_blank\">Layng Martine Jr.<\/a>, is a Nashville singer-songwriter with ties to Reba McIntire, Jerry Lee Lewis, Elvis Presley, <em>et<\/em>\u00a0various<em>\u00a0al<\/em>. And Layng III&#8217;s brother, Tucker Martine, has made a big splash in more mainstream genres, working in various capacities with <a title=\"Wikipedia, on Tucker Martine's musical CV\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Tucker_Martine#Artists_he_has_worked_with\" target=\"_blank\">a fine array of pop and rock musicians<\/a>\u00a0&#8212; even composing the startup sound for a version of Microsoft Windows (as did Brian Eno, for Windows 95).<\/p>\n<p>In his own career, &#8220;Corporal Blossom&#8221; has carved out one of those indescribable music niches &#8212; not quite a musician, not quite a DJ, not quite a producer, not quite a sonic artist, but a mashup of all those roles. (I encourage you to read the interview with him at the excellent but (alas) moribund\u00a0<a title=\"Some Assembly Required: Corporal Blossom\" href=\"http:\/\/www.blog.some-assembly-required.net\/2006\/04\/april-17-2006-corporal-blossom_16.html\" target=\"_blank\"><em>Some Assembly Required<\/em><\/a>\u00a0music blog.) His &#8220;White Christmas&#8221; &#8212; from, yes, <em>Mutated Christmas<\/em> &#8212;\u00a0doesn&#8217;t feature his own voice: that&#8217;s\u00a0<em>Elvis<\/em>, sampled from The King&#8217;s own rendition**. How about that?\u00a0As <a title=\"Google Books: 'Growing Young,' by Ashley Montagu\" href=\"http:\/\/books.google.com\/books?id=EoTXLpEX-h4C&amp;pg=PA120#v=onepage&amp;q&amp;f=false\" target=\"_blank\">Ashley Montagu wrote<\/a>:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>The world is so full of wonderful things we should all, if we were taught how to appreciate it, be far richer than kings.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Have a wonderfully <em>rich<\/em>\u00a0holiday!<\/p>\n<p>_________________________<\/p>\n<p><strong>About the video:<\/strong>\u00a0Big Bad Voodoo Daddy has done three Christmas albums, including the new <em>It Feels Like Christmas Time<\/em> release.\u00a0She Her &amp; I have worked as BBVD&#8217;s backup vocalists on more than one album, including this year&#8217;s Christmas title; this is one of several videos the two groups shot to promote the release. Nevertheless, it was Elvis&#8217;s version of the song which <a title=\"Wikipedia, on the 'controversy' surrounding Elvis Presley's recording of 'White Christmas'\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Elvis%27_Christmas_Album#Controversy\" target=\"_blank\">got songwriter Irving Berlin so bent out of shape<\/a>.
