Judy Garland, in <em>Meet Me in St. Louis<\/em>, introduces the world to &#8220;Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas&#8221; &#8212; and more or less ruins it for every succeeding performer:<\/p>\n<div class=\"intrinsic-container intrinsic-container-16x9\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"YouTube video player\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/CreWsnhQwzY?si=il7QQ45Q07ekTnU5\" width=\"560\" height=\"315\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/div>\n<p>(As Jordan Baker of the Dealing in Subterfuges blog recently <a href=\"http:\/\/jordanbaker.blogspot.com\/2008\/12\/little-known-facts-about-holiday.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">reminded<\/a> readers, the original version has none of this hang-a-shining-star\/highest-bough stuff. What that verse actually &#8212; much more piercingly poignantly &#8212; says is:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Someday soon, we all will be together &#8212;<br \/>\nIf the fates allow.<br \/>\n<em>Until then, we&#8217;ll have to muddle through somehow<\/em>&#8230;<br \/>\nSo have yourself a Merry Little Christmas now.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Got that???)<\/p>\n<p>Finally, the music of Christmas writing.
