When they become so derivative as to become <\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"margin-left: 3em;\">unintelligible,<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"margin-left: 1em;\">the same thing may be said for all of us, that we<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"margin-left: 2em;\">do not admire what<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"margin-left: 2em;\">we cannot understand: the bat<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"margin-left: 3em;\">holding on upside down or in quest of something to<\/span><\/p>\n<p>eat, elephants pushing, a wild horse taking a roll, a tireless wolf<br \/>\n<span style=\"margin-left: 2em;\">under<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"margin-left: 1em;\">a tree, the immovable critic twitching his skin like a horse that <\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"margin-left: 3em;\">feels a flea, the base-<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"margin-left: 2em;\">ball fan, the statistician &#8212;<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"margin-left: 2em;\">nor is it valid<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"margin-left: 3em;\">to discriminate against &#8220;business documents and<\/span><\/p>\n<p>school-books&#8221;; all these phenomena are important. One must make<br \/>\n<span style=\"margin-left: 2em;\">a distinction<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"margin-left: 1em;\">however: when dragged into prominence by half poets, the result <\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"margin-left: 3em;\">is not poetry,<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"margin-left: 1em;\">nor till the poets among us can be<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"margin-left: 2em;\">&#8220;literalists of<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"margin-left: 2em;\">the imagination&#8221; &#8212; above<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"margin-left: 3em;\">insolence and triviality and can present<\/span><\/p>\n<p>for inspection, &#8220;imaginary gardens with real toads in them,&#8221; shall<br \/>\n<span style=\"margin-left: 2em;\">we have<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"margin-left: 1em;\">it. In the meantime, if you demand on the one hand,<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"margin-left: 1em;\">the raw material of poetry in<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"margin-left: 2em;\">all its rawness and<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"margin-left: 2em;\">that which is on the other hand<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"margin-left: 3em;\">genuine, you are interested in poetry.<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>(Marianne Moore <em>[<a title=\"Google Books: Great Poems by Women (1998), edited by Susan L. But that&#8217;s the problem with the literal truth:<\/p>\n<p>It has very little poetry.
