Cartoonist Keith Knight is a regular contributor to my favorite monthly magazine, The Funny Times. To break the routine from his main comic strip, called The K Chronicles, he occasionally does a strip called “Life’s Little Victories.” He builds these strips from ideas submitted by readers — little one- or two-panel ideas describing the little things that make life worth living.
From the weekly Funny Times “Take a Break” cartoon email newsletter, here’s a recent and highly relevant collection of such victories (numbers 265 through 270), applicable across the political spectrum:
Of all US holidays, Election Day is at once the most mundane and the most sacred. No one gets presents (other than figurative ones), almost no one gets the day off from work, and celebrating it — usually — takes just a few minutes of time, alone with your own thoughts. Yet somehow, it’s still capable of making your pulse race and tears start to your eyes. There is not a single other citizen with whom you can’t share the day.
Really hope you’re celebrating this year; it just won’t be the same without you.

Election day should be a holiday — you’d see much greater voter turnout. That or you should be allowed to vote in your favorite bar.
In Delaware — at least Sussex County Delaware — they have a holiday called “Returns Day” that they celebrate on the Thursday following the election, because traditionally that’s when the results reached the county seat, Georgetown. I was lucky enough to live there during the 1992 holiday.

I was 18 the first time I voted. So this makes my 6th Presidential election. Hurray!

Marta: Some things are even worth interrupting the NaNoWriMo express for, huh? :)

Well, sort of. Tuesday night I hosted a write-in. In one window I had my so-called novel. In another window I was streaming results. And in my itunes I was streaming NPR.
When I got home I wrote during commercials or commentary I thought was silly.
The NaNoWriMo express may slow down, but it doesn’t stop.

I can see that would make for a productive evening. Heh.
NaNo is an interesting social experience (or seems to be, from the outside looking in). All these little kick-in-the-pants rituals and gimmicks. The idea of hosting a “write-in” on Election Night though… wizard!
