That, according to Wikipedia, is how comedian Demetri Martin’s humor is “often referred to.” Hmph. That’s as may be.
Whatever you call the genre, I’m hugely enjoying his new show, Important Things, in which he takes a single topic and just riffs on it for a half-hour. His “important thing” this week was safety. In the excerpt below, appearing as a commercial pitchman for a nursing home, he assures us there will be no more lying about Tony Bennett (among other things). As soon as possible convenient.

Mole: Message from QS “I’m glad safety is on your mind” — Professor Squeamish
John says
Prof. Squeamish: Yikes. I never knew art could be so dangerous — clearly I need to pay closer attention!
…and just on the off-chance you collect these little moments of serendipity, the recaptcha word-verif thing right now is midsummer April. Whatever the hell that means; it sure sounds like it means something.
Jules says
That’s a Comedy Central show, right? I keep saying I’m going to get cable just for that channel, just for Jon Stewart.
John says
Jules: Comedy Central — right. But y’know, if you’ve been happily cable-free I wouldn’t go changing things up. Cable TV giveth and taketh away, and not just in subscription fees!
But here‘s the home page for his show, with lots of videos. Great place to visit when you’re in the mood for a laugh. (As someone who often insists that she’s a geek, you might like this preview of a sketch about “Hoodwinkers”: “An agency specializing in deception helps a nerd with his image before a big date.”)
